SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King is pushing for the remaining 2km stretch of the about 5km-long Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce Road here to be lighted up before Gawai Dayak.

He said this when asked on the possibility for that particular stretch of road to be lighted up before the festival.

This is to facilitate road users making use of that stretch of road at night, especially in anticipation of higher traffic volume in the weeks running up to the celebration.

“Definitely, start (the light up) before the Gawai Dayak celebration. There is about one more month to go before the celebration; no worries — I will call Sesco to push for it,” Tiong told The Borneo Post.

“The BN (Barisan Nasional) government delivers what it promises.”

Tiong, who is Dudong assemblyman, was met after officiating at the Sarawak ICT Expo 2017 event here on Saturday.

He said a total of 50 street light units had already been installed in the area.

He revealed that the project cost about RM555,000 to implement and was approved by former chief minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem.

Tiong added that the funding came from the state government and that works to erect the poles at a distance of about 30 metres apart started in March.

Meanwhile, there had been many calls from members of the public for the area to be lighted up at night in the interest of safety, with claims it was very difficult to see the road in the dark especially during heavy rain.
