KUCHING: United People’s Party (UPP) president Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh has reminded the community of the importance of going for regular medical check-ups to avoid any late detection.

Wong, who is also Minister of International Trade and E-Commerce and Second Finance Minister, stressed the importance of maintaining good health during a health screening organised by the UPP Community Service Board (South Region) at Boulevard Shopping Mall here yesterday.

He said the event was meant to heighten public awareness of health screenings so as to encourage leading a healthy lifestyle.

Wong asserted that good health was particularly vital to individuals who are the sole breadwinners of their families.

Pointing out that prevention is better than cure, he said it mattered that people went for regular medical check-ups to enable early detection of any chronic diseases.

“Many of us have neglected the need for regular check-ups of our body. At times, it can be too late by the time they detect the illnesses.”

Wong said Malaysians had to pay only RM1 to enjoy health facilities in their country. As such, he encouraged the people to have medical check-ups regularly.

During the event, participants were able to get their body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, blood sugar and eyesight checked.

A health talk on diabetes and a blood donation drive were also held in conjunction with the event.
