SIBU: SK Perbandaran Sibu No 2 Board of Directors chairman Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau Lee Ming describes teachers as nation-builders who help shape the country through their profession.

“On Teachers’ Day, we remember and give due recognition as well as appreciation to dedicated teachers who have touched our lives and who help to shape today’s young generation into tomorrow’s leaders of the country,” he said at the school’s Teachers’ Day celebration yesterday.

Lau said the skills, knowledge and values that teachers help to instil in children will help them to grow up to become useful citizens.

“Because of them, our children will grow up to become knowledgeable people who will be of use to society, religion and our nation.”

Lau said the role of teachers is multi-faceted, comprising academic, pedagogical and social roles.

Apart from imparting knowledge to students, he said teachers were also role models of the values that we hope to inculcate in young children.

He said students are deeply affected and inspired by the teacher’s knowledge, his character, his competence and his moral commitment.

“A popular teacher can become a role model for his students,” he said.

Urging teachers to work hard, Lau said they have to play a cardinal role in the building of the character of the next generation.

“To all the teachers who have dedicated your life in one way or another towards the important task of nurturing and educating Malaysia’s young generation, I thank you for your hard work, commitment and relentless efforts.

“I hope you will continue to display a high level of commitment towards your duties and responsibilities that have been entrusted to you.”

Earlier, school headmaster Thomas Tang reminded the pupils to work hard and help the school build a name.

He said the school had achieved good academic results and he wanted the legacy to continue to ensure that the school would remain a good school.
