CM says has received list of potential candidates for Pujut by-election

KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said he has received the list of potential candidates from both SUPP and UPP to contest in the Pujut by-election on July 4.

He also said the name of the candidate would be announced in due time as the lists were quite lengthy.

“There are a lot of names. We will make the announcement,” said Abang Johari when asked by reporters if he had received the candidates’ list for the by-election. He, however, did not reveal when the official announcement would be made.

“I tell you honestly, it is an uphill task for BN, but we still feel that we can win,” said Abang Johari who is also the state BN chairman.

On May 19, the Election Commission (EC) chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Hashim Abdullah announced that polling for the Pujut by-election would be July 4 and nomination on June 20. The by-election follows the disqualification of Pujut  assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon from the DAP by the State Legislative Assembly on May 12.

Dr Ting, who won the seat with a majority of 1,759 votes during the May 2016 state election. He was challenged by Datuk Hii King Chion (direct BN candidate), Jofri Jaraiee (PAS) and Fong Pau Teck (Independent).

SUPP president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian was also present with Abang Johari during the launch of a Ramadan bazaar here yesterday. He, however, was silent on the subject (by-election).

He did tell reporters at the State Legislative Assembly on May 19 that SUPP would contest the by-election ‘as Pujut is the party’s traditional seat prior to the 11th state election last year’.
