MIRI: Miri Wushu Association (MWA) is going all out to retain its title in the Inter Secondary School Wushu Competition to be held in Sarikei this Friday and Saturday.

The association is sending a team of 39 athletes of which 20 are from Riam Road Secondary School (RRSS).

“This year, half of our team members are new compared to last year.

“But we really hope we can retain our champion title for the third time this year,” said chief coach Tiong Ching Chiong.

“They have been undergoing continuous training the last three days. So physically and emotionally, they are prepared to perform in Sarikei,” he added.

Assistant Minister of Tourism, Art and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin handed over the flag to the team in a simple ceremony yesterday.

He commended MWA for instilling discipline among their athletes.

“This martial art is also a good character building technique and I would like to urge parents to encourage their children to take up Wushu,” he said.

Also present at the ceremony were Lee’s special assistant Eric Chin, RRSS chief executive officer Dato Dr Fong Onn Min and RRSS principal Richard Liew.
