PUTRAJAYA: National Registration Department director-general Datuk Mohd Yazid Ramli said the granting of the Malaysian citizenship is the exclusive right of the federal government.

He said in considering applications for Malaysian citizenship, the burden of proving the eligibility of obtaining citizenship is the responsibility of each applicant and the consideration is subject to the requirements under Part III of the federal constitution.

In a statement today, Mohd Yazid said there are several reasons why applications for citizenship were rejected including not  meeting the eligibility requirements such as the period of residence,  good behavior, have knowledge of Malay fundamental/adequate / sufficient and intend to reside permanently in the country.

“Among others are documents not presented properly and  ambiguity of information during the interview,” he said when commenting on a statement by Gerakan vice president Datuk A.Kohilan Pillay who asked the Home Ministry why applications for citizenship were denied.

Kohilan claimed that he had received many complaints from applicants who were born in this country but their applications were rejected and that they did not know the reason. – Bernama
