KUCHING: Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) president Dato Posa Majais is hoping that Sarawak winger Tommy Mawat will take the chance to prove his capabilities after getting the call-up to join the national U22 squad.

He felt that this is a golden chance for the 21-year old to bring his football career to a higher level after playing for the country.

“Congratulations to Tommy for winning the trust of national U22 coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee.

“He has proven that he is one of the best players in the country after being selected for the national squad.

“I hope he will not waste this chance to prove his true abilities to help bring honour to the country and the state,” he said, adding that Tommy has a bright future ahead as he is still young.

However, Posa stressed that the player needs to maintain the consistency in his training and game to continue to secure the national coach’s trust.

At the same time, Posa hoped that Tommy’s selection to the national squad would inspire and motivate other young players to continue to improve themselves to follow in his footsteps.

Tommy was among the 22 players chosen by Ong for the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games Project.

Another Sarawak player Nur Shamie Iszuan Amin is not in the list as he is still nursing an injury.

The national U22 squad will undergo a exposure/training stint in China from June 8-16 where they will play against China B-22 team at Xiangtan Sports Centre Stadium today (Jun 10).

They will then fly to Guangzhou on Sunday (Jun 11) to play two more friendlies against Guangzhou R&F on Jun 13 and the Guangzhou Evergrande reserve squad on Jun 15 before flying home on Jun 16.
