KOTA KINABALU: A newborn baby boy was found abandoned near a stall along Jalan Salut near Telipok at around noon yesterday.
City police chief ACP M Chandra said that the baby was found alive but weak. He also had ant bites around his mouth and near the eyes.
The discovery was made by the owner of the stall, Chandra said.
According to him, the stall owner noticed a bag left near the stall selling cendol but ignored it.
“The bag started moving and thought that there was something alive inside. Curious the owner opened it to find a baby swaddled in a piece of cloth. He immediately carried the baby to the stall.
“The stall owner then called the police to report the finding,” Chandra said, adding that a medical officer from Tuaran was also called to the scene to help out and check the baby’s health.
Chandra said after checking, the medical officer confirmed that the baby was a newborn.
“The baby has been taken to the Tuaran district hospital where he is being treated as the medical officer suspected that the baby may have some infection as the place he was dumped was dirty and full of ants,” he said, adding that the baby’s condition is stable.
Investigations are being conducted under Section 317 of the Penal Code, said Chandra who urged those who may have any information to contact the Investigating Officer Inspector Nur Shajida Binti Shara at 017-724 0402 or the nearest police station.
