Filipino expatriate charged with offering bribe to police

SHAH ALAM: A Filipino expatriate was charged in the Sessions Court here yesterday with offering a RM50 bribe to a police officer.

Quintero Anthony Van Remolacio, 38, an information technology network engineer claimed trial to the charge read out to him in English by the court interpreter.

He stands accused of offering RM50 to Insp Rashi Akhbar Abd Rashid who is based at Sepang District Police Headquarters, as an inducement not to issue him a summons for failing to obey when police asked him to stop his car.

Anthony allegedly committed the offence along Jalan Persiaran Apec Cyberjaya, Sepang near here at 2.30am on June 10, under Section 17(b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009.

If found guilty, he faces Section 24 of the same Act which provides for a maximum imprisonment of 20 years and a fine of five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

Judge Slamat Yahya set bail at RM5,000 with one surety, and July 24 for remention.

The court also impounded the accused’s international passport pending disposal of the case.
