Woman caught with suspected Syabu

SARIKEI: Sarikei  District Narcotics Crime Investigation Department personnel arrested a 25-year-old woman on Wednesday for having in her possession a crystal-like substance believed to be  Syabu.

Sarikei District police chief Supt Mat Jusoh Muhamad said the suspect was arrested on the staircase of a hotel here around 11.15am.

Upon checking her sling bag, police found a plastic packet containing 0.42 grams of the suspicious substance.

He said the suspect allegedly obtained the substance from a man from Sibu.

A urine test on the suspect was positive for amphetamines.

She was detained for 24 hours to facilitate the investigation under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act.

Mat Jusoh said the seized substance has been sent to the Chemistry Department for analysis.

He added the suspect was released on police bail pending the outcome of the chemist’s report.

On the seriousness of drug abuse in the district, Mat Jusoh said the situation is under control.

He attributed this to the commitment of police in combating the menace coupled with the close cooperation of the public.
