SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council caught a total of 256 dogs in the first half of the year to address the problem of stray canines.

Council deputy chairwoman Rogayah Jamain said this Thursday when asked if SMC had stepped up efforts to catch stray dogs following the outbreak of rabies in Serian.

Sibu Rural District Council chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai said his council had intensified efforts to catch the canines.

Sempurai said the public were advised to confine their pet dogs to the compounds of their houses or keep them in cages to prevent them being caught by the dog catchers.

He noted that some of the so-called ‘stray dogs’ actually had owners. Sempurai said he had been informed by the dog unit of his council that they had yet to catch a stray dog as of Tuesday.

He assured the public that stray dogs, particularly aggressive ones, would be taken away.

“Any dog showing symptoms of rabies will be dealt with by Sibu Veterinary Department.”
