SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has acted on 20 cases of littering since the imposition of RM500 compound fine here on July 1.

SMC deputy chairwoman Rogayah Jamain said, thus far, nine individuals had settled their compound.

“Our enforcement officer will issue compound notices on the spot. As stated in the compound notice, the offender has to pay up within one week, failing which the council will issue a reminder,” she told The Borneo Post Thursday, adding the council will take legal action after the third reminder.

From July 1, SMC increased the compound for littering to RM500 from RM20.

SMC public health, environment and municipal services standing committee chairperson Rhoda Ting has suggested that tough action is necessary to get the public to toe the line, though she noted there was increased awareness among the public of the need to keep the town clean.
