MIRI: The noisy barking of dogs saved a girl from being trapped inside her house at Lorong Mulia 3A in Kampung Tudan Phase 2 here, which was razed by fire yesterday.

Alicesia Ajan, 23, said she was inside her room when she heard the six dogs in a cage at her backyard barking loudly.

“Upon hearing the noise, I went out of the room and saw that smoke had filled the back section of the house.

“Before leaving, I switched off electricity in the house and at that time, my neighbour came to bring me out from my house,” she related.

Alicesia said before the incident, her brother-in-law had invited her to attend a prayer session for a neighbour who had just passed away.

“I told my brother-in-law to take a break because he had been to the neighbour’s house in the morning. The incident happened very fast (such) that I did not have time to save any valuable things,” she said.

The six dogs, however, were killed in the fire.

According to Alicesia’s sister Presca Ajan, 34, she and other family members were at the neighbour’s house at the time of the incident.

“When we saw thick smoke coming out from my house, we rushed home to save my younger sister and also to see the situation,” she said.

Presca said there were six of them living there – herself, her husband, her mother, her two children aged six and eight, as well as Alicesia.

According to Miri police chief Law Poh Kiong, the firefighters received a distress call at 3.16pm.

“Five personnel from the Lopeng Fire and Rescue station rushed to the scene, located about 10km from the fire station. Six firefighters from Miri Fire and Rescue station were also despatched to the scene,” he said.

There were no reports of injuries. The cause of fire and estimated losses are yet to be ascertained.
