SIBU: Authors of Iban books are urged to contribute their books to public libraries here as a way to inculcate the reading culture among the Ibans.

Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) deputy chairman Robert Lau Hui Yew, who made the call yesterday, said libraries, especially those in the rural areas, are in dire need of Iban reading materials.

“It is very difficult to find books and other reading materials in Iban,” he reiterated when met after receiving books donated by Iban writer Casper Kayong Umpeng at the See Hua Marketing office in Tuanku Osman Road here.

The books, authored by Kayong, are meant for public libraries under SRDC’s jurisdiction.

The donation was made towards the three-month ‘Donate a Book’ campaign jointly rolled out by SRDC and See Hua Group, which was launched in April.

The objective was to stock the shelves of the five libraries under SRDC, namely in Durin, Rantau Panjang, Bawang Assan, Selangau and Sibu Jaya.

The campaign has collected over 6,000 books so far.

Meanwhile, TeaFM Sibu representative Kevin Lau thanked listeners who had responded positively to the book donation campaign.

Among those present at the function yesterday were Sibu Jaya Library’s assistant librarian Roswati Mid, See Hua Marketing senior assistant manager Kueh Nguan Seng and marketing executive Jamie Kong
