KUCHING: Thirty-four fire fighters battled a blaze which erupted on the top floor of the Telekom Malaysia (TM) call centre building along Jalan Were, here yesterday evening.

The  Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) deployed personnel from its fire stations at Batu Lintang, Padungan and Petra Jaya to the scene following a distress call at 6.42pm.

This was followed by the deployment of personnel from a fourth fire station in Tabuan Jaya to assist in putting out the blaze.

State Bomba director Nor Hisham Mohammad said there were no reports of injuries or casualties despite the highly visible blaze at the four-storey structure.

“Only the top floor of the call centre, which serves as a store, was affected. Fire fighters managed to prevent the flames from spreading through the stairs or lifts,” he said when met by reporters at the scene.

The situation was brought under control at 8pm.

Nor Hisham also added that this was the first case in five years involving a tall building.

The cause of the fire and damages involved have yet to be ascertained.
