MIRI: The current rabies scare in the state saw a man being rushed to the hospital after he was bitten by a stray dog in Pujut, here on Saturday night.
The victim, in his 30s, had gone to the back of a shop in Pujut 7 around 7.30pm to collect cardboard boxes for recycling when the dog suddenly appeared and attacked him.
The man said after the dog bit him on his right leg, he hit the canine with his motorcycle helmet to fend off further attacks before running away.
Several members of the Pujut Resident Committee (RC), who were called to the scene, transported the victim to Miri Hospital where he received a rabies vaccination and treatment for the bite wound on his leg.
Meanwhile, Miri mayor Adam Yii confirmed the incident when contacted by The Borneo Post yesterday.
“The man was suddenly attacked by the dog, which did not bark or give any sign of warning. It attacked the victim from behind and did not let go (of the victim’s leg) even after it was hit several times with a motorcycle helmet.”
Yii added the man has been admitted for quarantine at Miri Hospital.
As for the dog, he has instructed his council staff to get in touch with relevant people in the area to catch the canine and test it for rabies before putting it to sleep.
He also hoped members of the public not to cause unnecessary panic by speculating on the incident without confirmation from reliable sources.
