LAWAS: The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) here responded to a distress call from Lawas Hospital to remove a rusty bracelet and ring which had caused a patient’s hand to swell badly.

Lawas fire station chief Zaki Husin said a Bomba team led by senior officer Satu Bujang headed to the hospital’s Emergency Unit following a distress call at 7.07pm on Tuesday, and arrived to find a 47-year-old man in pain caused by the jewellery on his left hand.

He said it took firemen close to four hours to remove the bracelet and ring using special cutting tools, with the rescue operation coming to an end around 11pm.

“The patient had to endure the pain for nearly four hours before the items were removed with special cutting tools. We had to use special safety equipment and tools to cut the ring on the left hand of the patient,” said Zaki.

He added the team had to tread cautiously during the difficult operation in order to avoid causing injuries to the patient, whose hand was already badly swollen.

It was unclear how long the patient had been in his predicament prior to him seeking treatment at the hospital.
