SIBU: The Sibu chapter of Junior Chamber International (JCI) has been lauded on its great deal of contributions towards the development of the local community and also the state since its establishment 60 years ago.

According to Minister of International Trade and E-Commerce Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, members of JCI Sibu have consistently and continuously demonstrated their care and love for the community.

“It is done through little things such as addressing the environmental issues, being friendly and helpful to one another, promoting civic-mindedness, being compassionate, sympathetic, helpful to the less-fortunate people, and assisting those amongst us who need help.

“On behalf of the people and the state government, I would like to thank JCI Sibu for what they had done over the past 60 years,” he said in his opening remarks at JCI Sibu’s 60th anniversary celebration on Sunday.

Soon Koh, who is also Second Finance Minister and Bawang Assan assemblyman, viewed the history of JCI Sibu was longer than that of Sarawak as a component of Malaysia.

He said this period was long enough for the chamber to produce two to three generations of members – many of whom have reached middle age and throughout the years, been contributing to the development of the country.

“I know your achievements over the past 60 years have been tremendous. Your past leaders had left behind an illustrious tradition and built firm foundation upon which the younger leaders can build further and of course, make the organisation better.

“But on a historic occasion like this, it is important for us to pause, reflect and take stock of what we have and have not done, so that we can look to the future with a clearer perspective and move forward with renewed vigour and confidence,” he said.

The event also hosted Sibu Resident Hii Chang Kee, Sibu Municipal Council chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King, JCI national president Nurul Huda Mohd Affandi, JCI Sibu Alumni chairman Dato Andrew Wong Kee Yew, JCI Sibu president Daphne Chiew and event organising chairperson Irene Pet.
