SIBU: The proposed night market in Sibu Jaya, when implemented, will boost the economy of the growing township which currently has a population of about 30,000 people.

In stating this yesterday, Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai said the night market will provide opportunities for residents to supplement their income.

“The (implementation of the) proposed night market for Sibu Jaya is still in progress. Depending on the tender process, facilities such as lighting, canopy and others should be ready in September.

“I hope that when the proposed night market in Sibu Jaya starts operating (in time to come), it will help boost the township’s economy and help its residents earn extra or steady income,” he told The Borneo Post when contacted.

Sempurai added: “Currently, the population of Sibu Jaya township is about 30,000 people. As such, with that kind of population, there is need for a night market to cater to the demand of Sibu Jaya residents.”

He also said the council will conduct an interview with stall applicants this month.

“I have being informed by the council’s licensing section that there are more than 150 stall applicants.

“This shows that Sibu Jaya people really want this night market to open there.”

On a separate matter, he disclosed that the council has already identified a suitable site for a ‘Rumah Asap’, or smokehouse barbeque joint.

“Currently, the council is still considering the costing for building the structure,” Sempurai revealed.
