KUCHING: PechaKucha Night is making its October edition all about Kuching in conjunction with ‘What About Kuching (WAK) 2017’, a month-long festival celebrating the arts, culture and lifestyles of the people of Kuching.

PechaKucha Kuching, organised by IDC Architects, plans on being a bit more selective about their content this time around, placing more emphasis on talks about Kuching.

First devised by Klein Dytham Architecture, the first PechaKucha Night was held in the SuperDeluxe bar in Tokyo in February 2003.

In September 2012, Kuching became the 562nd city in the world to hold its own PechaKucha Night. Today, PechaKucha Night is being run in over 900 cities around the world.

Design director of IDC Architects, Jeffery Yeung said they are in the midst of curating the speakers and want to keep everything as local as possible.

“We will give priority to those who have submitted proposals on previous events but were not selected,” he said, adding that while PechaKucha typically doesn’t have a theme, they are going along with WAK for this edition.

Mark your calendar as the Kuching edition of PechaKucha Night Vol 5 will happen at The Granary on Oct 20, 8.20pm. If you are interested to attend, email [email protected].

WAK 2017 celebrates the arts, culture and lifestyles of the people of Kuching by creating a platform to share the abundant talent in Sarawak.

The month-long event from Sept 30 to Oct 29 will encompass every genre from visual to performing arts, traditional to contemporary arts, and from exhibitions to outdoor pursuits.

To date, various groups have committed to over 20 components with more to come. WAK 2017 is open to more participants. Send in your proposals to [email protected].

If you know of someone who fits into what WAK 2017 is trying to achieve, the festival organisers want to hear from you.
