Take up Yayasan Sarawak scholarships for STEM, says Dr Sim

KUCHING: Sarawakians have been asked to take up Yayasan Sarawak scholarships to pursue research-oriented master’s and doctorate degrees in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian pointed out that this is necessary to prepare Sarawak for digital economy.

“The best way is to provide the resources to help our young people, especially in education opportunities,” he said when contacted yesterday.

“We need to nurture and develop more Sarawakian talents, enhance their intellect and help them gain skills for the future.”

Dr Sim stressed that growing ‘our own talents’ is crucial to build Sarawak’s future.

During the state-level National Day celebration in Bintulu on Thursday, Abang Johari said the government would send Sarawakians to study various new disciplines at master’s and doctorate levels at reputable research universities in Malaysia and overseas, with Yayasan Sarawak providing the loans and scholarships.

The scholarship programme is for areas such as cell structure/biology (cytology), biochemistry, embryology, genetics, micro-biology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, bioprocess engineering, bio-robotics, biomorphic robotics, instrumentation control engineering, image processing, sensors and actuator, mechatronic, cloud computing, cognitive info communication, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, software engineering, data analytics, and human-computer interaction.
