BINTULU: A new English language Toastmasters club named ‘Bintulu Speakers Club’ has been formed in Bintulu.

The club was chartered as a member club of Toastmasters International on June 28 this year.

Bintulu Speakers Club meets at 8pm on each first and third Tuesday of the month at GoldenBay Hotel, Bintulu. This public, community club is open to anyone aged 18 years and above.

Its formation was spearheaded by two passionate Toastmasters namely Lisa Chee, ACB, ALS who heads the HR department of a multinational company in Samalaju; and Wendy Ling Yiu Yain, ACG, ALB the Area E3 director.

“I have been a Toastmaster since 2010 and have personally benefited from the training. The programme has helped me build communication and leadership skills that have been a great asset to me in my career and personal growth,” said Chee who is also charter president of the club.

“The idea for the formation of this club came from immediate past E3 area director Kok Chun Moy who felt a demand from the Bintulu community for a new English Toastmasters club. She approached me to help form this club, and the rest is history.

“The seed has been planted and our role is to nurture it – we are happy the club has been born. Now more people in Bintulu community can benefit from the Toastmasters’ time-tested programme,” said Lisa.

To mark the occasion a charter party was held at Golden Bay Hotel Bintulu yesterday, during which club office-bearers for the 2017/2018 term were sworn in.

The event was graced by the immediate past District 87 director, DTM Ivy Lau. District 87 comprises more than 170 corporate and community clubs with over 7,000 members across Brunei, East Malaysia and Indonesia.

Guest-of-honour Soo Li Ching is a political secretary to the chief minister.
