KAPIT: The Community Development Department (Kemas) held the ‘Moh Ngeteh Merdeka’ event for hundreds of pupils from 23 Kemas kindergartens in the Kapit parliamentary constituency recently.

Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat, who officiated at the event, said a sense of belonging, loyalty, and patriotism must be instilled in children from an early age.

“Children learn very fast. It is important to instil among them the noble values of a patriotic spirit. When they grow up, they will be responsible citizens who safeguard peace and order, and the nation’s sovereignty and independence,” he said.

“Know the history of independence. Our elders fought for independence from the colonial government. Today, Malaysia is an independent country because our elders realised the importance of cooperation and unity.”

Jamit also praised Kemas for providing early childhood education in longhouses and villages for the convenience of rural families.

“It is important to attain holistic education so that students, apart from acquiring knowledge and skills from books,

vocational or technical training, know that the moral aspect is equally important.

“Instil among them good moral values, discipline, responsibility and a sense of loyalty and belonging towards the nation. Today’s children are future leaders. I appeal to parents and teachers, to guide children properly so that when they grow up, they are positive and capable of contributing towards nation-building,” he added.
