KOTA KINABALU: Nine people have been detained by police for driving under the influence of alcohol early yesterday morning.
The four-hour operation, which begins at 1 am, was carried out along Coastal Highway, Lintas Road, Tuaran Bypass, Jalan Kepayan and Jalan Sulaman.
City police chief ACP M. Chandra said those detained were found to have exceeded the alcohol limit under Section 45A of the Road Transport Act 1987.
“About 151 vehicles were stopped and thoroughly checked by the police during the operation.
“Eleven people were checked on suspicion of exceeding alcohol consumption and from the figure, nine were further remanded for suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol,” he said.
Police also issued 13 summonses for numerous traffic offences, he said, adding that the operation was to remind the public not to drink and drive, and such operation would be carried out from time to time.
