Orang Ulu cultural village features at ‘Taste of Borneo 2017’

MIRI: The organising committee of ‘Taste of Borneo 2017’ will have an Orang Ulu Cultural Village set up at the carnival, which will take place at the open carpark of the Boulevard Mall here from Nov 24 to Dec 3.

According to event organising chairman Harry Lee, the Orang Ulu village will provide visitors the opportunity to sample and experience the true culture of this community throughout the carnival hosted by Sarawak Chinese Association with endorsement from Sarawak Information Centre.

“The carnival is also included on Sarawak’s calendar of events,” he said during the organising committee meeting at the association’s premises here recently.

Carnival advisor Datuk Hii King Chiong expressed his confidence of the event being able to foster ties among members of the diverse communities here.

“Through unity, I believe that this event is going to be a success. Let’s work together to promote racial unity through this platform.”

The recent meeting hosted representatives of the carnival partners such as the Dayak Association Miri, Sikh Association Miri, Indian Association Miri, Malay Association Miri, Federation of Orang Ulu Associations Sarawak, Malaysia (Forum) as well as officials from Sarawak Islamic Information Centre.

It is learnt that Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has been invited to officiate at the opening of the carnival, with Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching, Fu Jijun as guests-of-honour.

In addition, the organising committee has also extended the invitation to the opening ceremony to Miri Mayor Adam Yii, Miri Resident Sherrina Hussaini and Miri police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah.

The 10-day carnival will be filled with a variety of programmes such as street dances as well as street singing and musical competitions, Borneo Mandarin singing contest, performances from Silver City Music Records Enterprise, the Borneo National Dance Contest 2017, ‘Cheongsam Contest’, bodybuilding contest, and Miss Model Recycled Clothing pageant.

In addition to these activities, the organiser will also hold the ‘Best Decorated Stall’ competition that offers RM1,000 to the winner, followed by RM500 and RM300 for the respective runners-up.

The organiser will also give away 1,000 ‘mystery gifts’ to those who click ‘Like’ on the event’s Facebook page – this promotion is on a ‘first-come, first-serve’ basis.
