Indonesian skipper fined RM10,000 for smuggling cooking gas canisters


TAWAU: An Indonesian skipper was fined RM10,000, in default nine months’ jail,  by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for  smuggling 50 canisters of cooking gas out of the country.

Magistrate Mohammad Faisal Che Saad meted out the fine on Firdaus Amir, 20, who pleaded guilty to the charge.

Firdaus was charged with smuggling the gas canisters in a boat heading to Sungai Nyamuk, Indonesia, when detained by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) at 5.30 pm last Sept 8 in Sungai Melayu, Pulau Sebatik.

Following inspection by MMEA, the boat was found carrying 50 canisters of LPG , each weighing 14kg, without a permit.

He was charged with violating Regulation 3(1) of the Control of Supplies Regulations 1971

and provisions under the Control of Supplies Act 1961. — Bernama
