MIRI: School management boards are urged to play active roles to ensure their schools are bully-free.

Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting said such commitment is vital in an effort to project schools as safe places for the students to obtain formal education.

“Schools are supposed to be safe places for students to get their education, but with bullying cases on the rise of late, they will only tarnish the good image of schools if not nipped at the bud.

“School management boards must thus be more alert to any signs of bullying among the students. Take immediate action to prevent its spread,” he said after officiating at a donation campaign  for 1,000 pairs of Flip Flops and ‘Telekung’ and ‘Say No To Bullying Programme’ at Permy Mall here yesterday.

Although student bullying issue in Sarawak is relatively low, Ting expressed his concern because the number is now slowly rising.

“In term of percentage, we are still low compared to those in Peninsular Malaysia. However, we must not take this for granted.”

He also reminded parents to immediately lodge report to the school management if they know of their children or their friends being the targets of bullies in schools.

Chairman of Pertubuhan Batas Malaysia of Piasau Khalid Abdul Manap was also present at the function.
