Illegal trade of sun bears in Malaysia – how to save them from extinction

KUCHING: Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) Kuching Branch is organising a free public talk on the conservation of sun bears, the smallest member of the bear family.

The talk will be given by Dr Wong Siew Te, a Malaysian wildlife biologist and sun bear expert who has been recognised for his work on sun bears, and was even featured in the book ‘Wildlife Heroes’ in 2012.

In 2008, he founded the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre in Sabah.

Dr Wong was honoured as ‘Member-Order of the Defender of State in Penang’ in 2014, awarded as ‘My Country Hero’ by the Malaysian government, and also chosen as a CNN Hero in 2017.

The event will be held on this Thursday (Oct 19) at the Islamic Information Centre (Lower Baruk), Jalan Ong Tiang Swee,  9.30pm.
