GCM Miri swimmers splash to ISB victory

KUCHING: Gymkhana Club Miri stole the show at the 7-9 Years Old ISB Sprints & Master Swimming Championship held at ISB International School swimming pool, Brunei last Sunday.

Their team of only five swimmers – Deven Carroll, Genista Druce, Seau Zhi Ping, Joel Chong Han Yuan and Ashleigh Hau Syut Ching – captured 10 gold medals to lift the overall championship title for the first time.

Nine-year old Deven was the team’s star performer as he bagged six gold medals in the 25m backstroke, 25m breaststroke, 25m freestyle, 25m butterfly, 50m freestyle and 4x25m freestyle mixed relay.

Seau, 8, also impressed with five golds in the 25m freestyle, 25m breaststroke, 25m backstroke, 25m butterfly and 4x25m freestyle mixed relay.

Genista and Ashleigh were also members of the quartet that won that relay gold.

Kelab Renang Pujut Miri finished as runners-up with nine gold and four silver medals while Royal Brunei Recreation Club took third place with 5-10-8.

Penaga Stingrays and Isb Hammerheads occupied fourth and fifth positions with 3-6-8 and 2-7-8 respectively.

Following behind were Jerudong Swimming Club (0-2-4) and Brunei Speed Swimming Club (0-0-1) while Dolphin Swimming Club and Skim Latihan Renang Tutong went home empty-handed.

The championship, organised by ISB International school, attracted 131 swimmers from nine swimming clubs.
