SIBU: Sgt Major Bhaskaran Andy may have been thousands of miles away from his hometown in Peninsular Malaysia, but celebrating Deepavali here with his family yesterday was still as joyful.

He held an open house at his quarters at the Sibu police headquarters to mark the Festival of Lights.

“We serve our guests the traditional Indian food like muruku, curry and tosai. My wife and I prepared the food,” he said when met at his open house.

He said there are 12 Indian policemen serving here, some of whom have chosen to return to their hometowns for the celebration.

Bhaskaran was first posted to Sarawak in 1982.

In 1988, he married Roslind Jeman from Jagoi, Kanowit and they have four children.

Bhaskaran added that just like other interracial families, his family also goes back to his wife’s longhouse during Gawai Dayak to celebrate the festival.
