Body parts of crocodile attack victim recovered

LAHAD DATU: Human body parts, believed to be that of a man, who was reportedly attacked by a crocodile in Sungai Long Patau, Sahabat 26 near here last Sunday, were recovered on Tuesday.

Lahad Datu Fire and Rescue Department chief Mohd Apandi Mahmood, who led the search and rescue (SAR) operations, said that the body parts were found at around 6.20 am.

“The body parts were found on the second day of the SAR operation about 800 meters from where the victim was reportedly attacked by the reptile.

“We received information of the incident at 8.59 pm on Sunday. However, a Fire and Rescue team could only be deployed to the site at 6.30 am on Monday as it was far away from the station,” he said, adding that the police, Civil Defense Force, Wildlife Department, Felda auxiliary police and villagers assisted in the search.

The recovered body parts are believed to be that of one Muhammad Isnain Safri, in his 30s, who was reported missing after he was dragged into the river by a crocodile while collecting crabs from traps set in the river, last Sunday.

The crocodile attack, which took place at about 6.05 pm, was witnessed by the victim’s nephew who immediately sought help from other anglers in the area. The victim, who worked as a plantation supervisor had gone fishing and was reportedly setting traps for crabs in the area at around 2.30 pm.
