160,000 user accounts affected by ammonia pollution in Sg Johor

JOHOR BAHRU: Syarikat Air Johor (SAJ Ranhill Sdn Bhd) has once again detected ammonia in the Sungai Johor, which forced the closure of the Semangar water treatment plant operations in Kota Tinggi late last night.

The ammonia pollution has thus, affected 160,000 user accounts in Johor Bahru and Kulai who face water supply disruption.

SAJ Ranhill Sdn Bhd corporate communications head, Jamaluddin Jamal said the water quality monitoring device found ammonia content about 11 Friday night, making it the third time this year that ammonia was detected.

“The water quality supplied by SAJ Ranhill is a priority. Therefore, the standard of ammonia reading level of 1.5 parts per million (ppm) set by the Health Ministry needs to be adhered to,” he said in a statement here yestrday.

He said the SAJ Ranhill had to decide not to treat the raw water which contained 2.75ppm of ammonia.

Jamaluddin said the Semangar water treatment plant was the main plant which channelled treatment water to parts of Johor Bahru and Kulai. — Bernama
