More than 400 blood donors receive awards, trophies

KUCHING: Malaysia Red Cresent (Kuching District Chapter) has honoured more than 400 blood donors in 2016 with awards and trophies.

Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian presented the awards and trophies to the donors here.

“I wish to pay a special tribute to our pioneer blood donors who have laid the foundation for the success and sustainability of the blood donation programme. You have given us a lifesaving legacy that you and your family can be proud of.

“You have saved countless lives by donating your blood. You are the reason many individuals are alive and healthy today,” he said in a text of speech read by Tan Kai a political secretary to chief minister, yesterday.

“We also acknowledge the various organisers of the blood donation campaigns. They work tirelessly to organise blood drives, recruit and retain donors in their communities. I am also happy to see many youths responding tho the drive.”

MRC Kuching District chairman Datuk Dr Abang Abdul Rauf Abang Zain also spoke. He said the recruitment of blood donors for all government hospitals and Normah Medical Specialist Centre is a heavy task.

“The successful blood donation campaign in Kuching is the result of cooperation and support of many.

“We are happy that we have been successfully doing this community service since 1974. We shall continue to do it for the well being of the community.”

Chairman of Blood Donors Recruitment Services sub-committee, John Jong said a total of 22,368 pints were collected in 2016 for use by Sarawak General Hospital, Normah Medical Specialist Centre and and Bau Hospital. It is a slight drop from the 2015 figure of 22,648 pints.

“All certificates and medals should be claimed within one year from the date of the presentation of Blood Donors Awards.”

This year’s slogan of World Blood Donor Day is ‘What can you do? Give blood. Give now. Give often’.

MRC Kuching advisor Datuk Abang Abdul Karim Tun Datuk Abang Openg was also present at the function.
