KUCHING: The remand order for eight Vietnamese fishermen arrested in connection with a child molestation case was yesterday extended for another two days to allow for further investigation.

All the suspects, aged between 19 and 47, were produced before Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi after the expiry of their original seven-day remand order.

Their lawyer Azam Trudin submitted a lengthy submission to the court to reject the extended remand application, while lawyer Lim Lian Kee appeared for the girl’s parents, who wished to withdraw the complaint. Both submissions were rejected.

The men were arrested following a police report lodged by the four-year-old girl’s parents. The suspects were picked up at a house in Matang around 5am on Oct 25.

It is understood that the girl was left under the care of the men while her parents ran errands. The men were brought in by the girl’s father to work for his deep sea fishing business. The case is being investigated under Section 354 of the Penal Code.
