KUCHING: A fun-filled family day was organised by the Social Welfare Council of Sarawak at Megalanes in Emart Batu Kawa on Sunday.

More than 70 participants from several welfare related Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) took part in the family day which was held for the first time by the council.

Ministry of Welfare, Community, Well Being, Women, Family and Childhood Development permanent secretary Dr Saadiah Abdul Samah said the event was an avenue for NGOs to get together and understand the roles of each other.

“We in the ministry are always looking forward to forge cooperation with the NGOs as our objective is to improve the standard of living in Sarawak,” said Saadiah who represented the minister Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah at the event.

She noted that the ministry had received a substantial allocation under Budget 2018 which would be used to further spur the welfare related projects in the state.

On another note, Saadiah who is a former director of Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) admitted that she was still on the learning curve to better understand the state’s welfare scenario.

Also speaking was the Social Welfare Council of Sarawak president Major Francis Ng Teck Beng who hoped that similar events would be held in future for the NGO members to mingle and find ways to serve the community better.

“However, our ultimate aim is for everyone to get to know each other in an informal setting, outside the office,” said Ng in his brief welcoming remarks.
