MIRI: Sarawak needs to set up more international standard medical and healthcare centres with medical specialists before embarking on medical tourism.

Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin said this is an area of tourism that the state hopes to develop along with conventional tourism products of culture, nature and history.

“We welcome and encourage private and international medical and healthcare centres, including specialists, to set up their facilities here in Sarawak. The state has the potential as there is quite a big number of Indonesians, particularly from Kalimantan, and recently more Singaporeans heading to Normah Medical Centre in Kuching for treatment and healthcare services,” he said during a public health talk by Gleneagles Kota Kinabalu in collaboration with the Miri Hing Ann Association and Miri City Medical Centre yesterday.

Pointing out that Miri will have two new medical and healthcare centres, Lee said many Bruneians are coming here for dental and oral health services.

Gleneagles cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Abu Bakar Mamat spoke on ‘Heart Attack: What Should We Know’, while neurosurgeon, pain management specialist and endoscopic spine surgeon Dr Tan Wei Chean spoke on ‘Lower Back Pain: Are You Getting Best Treatment?’.

Miri City Medical Centre also provided free basic health screening to attendees.
