SARIKEI : Facilities and infrastructure provided by the government are for the benefit of the people.

In stating this, Assistant Minister of Town Planning, Land Administration and Environment, Datu Len Talif Salleh called on the people to make full use and take good of such facilities or infrastructure like their own properties.

Len who was invited to officially kick off the People’s Carnival and declare open Kampung Seberang Integrated Sports Complex here yesterday commended Sarikei District Council (SDC) for organising sports and recreational activities which were instrumental in making the sports complex a reality.

He believed the main objective of providing a public sports facility was to encourage the people to take up sports for healthy lifestyle as well as to unearth sporting talents from among the local community.

Sports also nurture teamwork as well as unify the people of the community from diverse backgrounds, Len added.

“As it is for your benefit, regard public facilities as your own and consider it your responsibility to take good care of them,” Len advised.

He believed when members of the public have a sense of ownership over public facilities, vandalism would not happen.

Instead of wasting money on repairing vandalized facilities, it could be used for setting up of more facilities, he added.

A total of 15 teams represented various government agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in various traditional games during the carnival.

Other activities during the carnival was an Auto Show, Led kite show, Busking, children’s colouring contest and youth’s activities.

Among those present were Sarikei Resident, Mohd Junaidi mohidin, Deputy SDC chairman, Awangku Ibrahim Awangu Hosainand SDC Secretary, Henry Jalin watt
