THE GOVERNMENT is urged to continue allocating funds for the third phase of the flood mitigation project in Sibu.

In making this call, Datuk Tiong Thai King (BN-Dudong) said the proposed third phase of the project should protect lower Lanang Road and Sibu town centre all the way to Sg Antu from flooding.

“We thank the federal government for implementing Phase 1 and 2 of the flood mitigation project through the Department of Irrigation and Drainage which has been effective in protecting upper and middle Lanang Road from flooding.

“We urge the government to seriously consider to continue to allocate funding for the third phase of the project,” he said when debating the budget speech yesterday.”

Tiong said lower Lanang – the stretch from in front of Catholic High School to Jalan Khoo Peng Loong – would be flooded if there was heavy rainfall that coincided with king tide.

He said such situation had caused inconvenience and disruption to the people of Sibu.

“If the flood mitigation project could continue from where Phase 2 stopped at Jalan Aman, Sibu town will effectively be flood-free,” he added.
