KUCHING: A total of 557 saplings were planted at the Demak-Isthmus area around the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching in Sejingkat yesterday.

It was part of the Environment Beautification Programme under the Association of Wives of Ministers and Assistant Ministers of Sarawak (Sabati) and Kuching North City Commission (DBKU).

“For our programme this morning (yesterday), we are planting 557 saplings – 108 Bucida species and 449 Bougainvillea,” said Kuching North Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai.

Sabati Sports, Culture and Recreation sub-committee chairperson Datuk Fatimah Mohd Iskandar shared that Sabati president Datin Patinggi Datuk Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang was the one who suggested aside from planting big trees, there should also be colourful flowers.

She said the programme aimed to beautify developing areas, inculcate a culture of beautification among the people, as well as promote unity and love of the environment among Sarawakians.

Fatimah added that the programme will see the seedlings planted along 1.2km of the BCCK inner road.

DBKU will also plant 430 Eugenia and Yellow Bells along 2.5km of Jalan Keruing.
