New substation to improve Miri’s power supply reliability

MIRI: The RM10.5 million Miri Town 33 kV indoor substation, which is expected to be commissioned by August 2018, will improve power supply reliability here.

Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) said in a statement the substation is a critical component of overall reinforcement works for central Miri’s electricity supply network, catering to increasing demand for power due to rapid expansion.

The new substation will replace the current outdoor facility, which has been in operation for over 30 years and requires equipment reconditioning and replacement.

It will also improve the substation’s performance in terms of reliability and compatibility with other ongoing upgrading initiatives.

The substation will serve as the primary supply source to central Miri, which includes the central business district, major commercial centres and surrounding residential areas.

An indoor substation is said to reduce the risk of equipment damage as there is added protection from external conditions so maintenance works can be carried out safely.

The overall reinforcement work undertaken by SEB, with an investment of almost RM1 billion, is expected to be completed within the next five years.

Major projects implemented simultaneously since 2014 include additional injection points with the construction of a number of zone substations in urban Miri and its outskirts.

Upgrading of other infrastructure such as additional feeders, transformers, replacement of ageing equipment and powerlines would also be rolled out.
