Penan students to be exposed to international fraternity at conference

Bernard looks forward to learning from TEDxKenyalang.

KUCHING: TEDxKenyalang will be held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Nov 25 and 26.

A local company Kenyalang Capital Ventures Sdn Bhd will sponsor 10 Penan students to attend the conference under Helping Hands Penan in line with the company’s CSR efforts to help underprivileged youths improve their knowledge and skills.

“By attending TEDxKenyalang, these students will be exposed to international speakers and delegates. We hope this will inspire them to strive for their dreams and achieve greater success with their education and exposure to an international fraternity at TEDxKenyalang,” said company director Muhammad Firdaus Manan.

Bernard Upieh, one of the sponsored Penan students, says he appreciates the chance to be involved with TEDxKenyalang.

“I’m a Penan from Ulu Baram, Long Kerangan. My aim is to be a doctorate holder and be an inspiration to my people. I hope to learn many things from this conference. TEDxKenyalang’s theme this year is ‘Be the Best’, and that’s exactly what I hope to be,” added Bernard.

He holds  a Masters in Social Sciences (Community Development) and is waiting to be accepted to do a PhD.

The 2-day conference will see talented speakers from all walks of life share their stories, among them Professsor Mushtak

Al-Atabi, Alvin Wee, Azmir Zed, Magdalene Muuk, Aziph Mustapha, Sada Borneo music band, Dr M Abdullah Zaidel, Anthony Sebastian, Diane Russell, Datin Valerie Mashman and James Lai.

Shaped by their experiences and ideas, speakers will explore paradigms that inspire, empower and motivate participants to embrace new perspectives.

On top of that, there will be workshops by BIMP-EAGA, products showcase and bazaar selling a variety of goods.

The event is expected to attract 500 participants.
