KUCHING: Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) is working closely with the banking industry and police in the fight against counterfeit banknotes.

BNM Kuching head Rosani Mahamad Zain said although the number of counterfeit banknotes in Malaysia remained low, it is important to advocate the general public on Malaysia’s currency and security features.

“The public should be able to identify any counterfeit currency notes through simple ‘Feel, Look, Tilt and Check’ guide.

“We would like to advise the public to remain vigilant, especially the ‘pasar malam’ (night market) vendors when handling currency notes as counterfeit banknotes normally comes in larger denomination RM50 and RM100,” she told reporters at the ‘Ops Pasar Malam’ Bank Negara Malaysia Currency Education and Public Awarenesses Campaign held at Metrocity last night.

She advised those who received such counterfeit notes to lodge a police report immediately.

Rosani said there is a higher tendency for counterfeit currency notes to circulate in the night market, due to the gloomy environment where business is conducted.

This is the first phase of operation emphasising on night markets and the second phase will be carried out at shopping malls and wet markets.
