SIBU: Meradong boys and Miri girls were the champions in the State Youth U-14 and U-16 Volleyball Championship at the Sibu Volleyball Indoor Stadium on Thursday night.

Meradong boys took both titles in the U-14 and U-16 categories while Miri girls also did a double, lifting the U-14 and U-16 titles.

Victory for Meradong was certainly sweet and memorable as the last time the team lifted both titles was almost a decade ago.

Meradong, once state volleyball powerhouse, had since gone downhill.

In recent years, the team rejuvenated following a change of guards.

Miri girls, on the other hand, continued their good run as they retained their titles for the fourth consecutive years.

Outstanding spikers were selected to represent the 17th National Milo U-14 and U-16 Volleyball Championship to be held in Kuala Lumpur on Nov 29 and Dec 11 respectively.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Volleyball Association (Sava) president Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau Lee Ming reminded the state players to work hard and bring back glory for the state in both championships.

“Our teams have always been reckoned, and we hope that we will continue to rule with that tagline,” he said at the closing ceremony.

Sava deputy president Dr Gregory Hii, Sibu Volleyball Association (SVA) president Dr William Ting and SVA chairman Dato Moh Wung Ming were also present.
