KUCHING: Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Snowdan Lawan is hoping that badminton would become a sport for all races in Sarawak.

According to him, there should be no stereotype in sports and any race should not be associated with a certain sport.

Thus, he hopes that when sports tournaments are organised, it should be open to everyone of any race who wishes to participate.

“We want all sports to be played by all races.

“Associating a certain sport with a certain race should stop as we live in a multiracial country,” he added.

Snowdan was officiating at the YB Snowdan Lawan Cup Open Badminton Championship opening ceremony in Kota Sentosa yesterday.

Adding on, he hoped that local sportsmen would do their best and try to reach and compete at international level.

He said that one would know how good they are as an athlete when competing against international opponents.

“If we never try, then we would never know.

“Please have that ambition to compete at the international stage; this will bring you benefits,” he added.

The tournament ends today.

Also present was LEA Sports Centre operation manager Poh Siok Hoon.
