SIBU: The festive season is a time for various races and religious communities to strengthen their unity to become better citizens, Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) deputy chairman Rogayah Jamain said.

“This is time for us to show love, peace and joy. This is time we enjoy together.

“This is a celebration for people of different races and religions.

“We cannot be solitary. This is the time of joy for everyone to celebrate,” she said when met after a ceremony to light up the main Christmas tree at Sibu Town Square here on Tuesday.

Council chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King officiated at the function held in conjunction with a ‘Christmas Tree Decoration Contest’ the judging of which was done on the same day.

The contest organised by the council drew participation from 15 corporations, including KTS Group and Farley Supermarket.

Rogayah said the colourful Christmas trees had turned Sibu Town Square into a fantasy land, rendering the venue a tourist attraction.

“This is something we are proud of,” she said, adding that this year is Visit Sibu Year.

The result of the contest will be announced at the New Year Countdown on Dec 31.
