MIRI: The community in the interior of Baram, particularly in low-lying areas, are reminded to be alert and be prepared for any eventuality of flooding as the rainy weather is expected to persist until year end.

Heavy rain for the last couple of days had caused three settlements in low-lying areas namely Long Atip, Long Wat and Long Bemang to be flooded.

“Although Long Atip is inundated with water as deep as two feet, there has been no evacuation of people. The water level in these three settlements, especially in Long Atip, is expected to rise as the bad weather is forecast to continue for a few days,” Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau said when updating The Borneo Post on the situation in his constituency.

According to Dennis, Telang Usan District Office, Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), Civil Defence Force (JPAM) and Welfare Department are monitoring the situation and are ready to be mobilised.

As at press time, Telang Usan District Office had mobilised teams to villages and longhouses in the low-lying areas to monitor and assess the situation.

“At the moment, the water level in 10 villages and longhouses in low-lying areas is reported to be rising since last night,” said Dennis, adding that low-lying areas in Long Bedian were also affected by the continuous heavy rain.

In this regard, he advised the villagers to be on the alert and monitor the weather and water level, especially at night.
