SIBU: Sarawak Workers’ Party (SWP) wants the government to speed up the projects under  the Rural Transformation Project (RTP).

Speaking at a press conference after its 4th Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Kingwood Hotel yesterday, SWP president Munan Laja said this was one of the four resolutions adopted by SWP during the meeting.

He said the construction of roads, water supply, electricity and even opening up the land for development must be speeded up before it is too late.

“Why do I say too late; I see now in the rural areas, some longhouses are already empty.  There was no occupant and many schools in rural areas, the number of teachers are bigger than the students,” he explained.

RTP is are moving too slowly, he added, and people have started moving out from the longhouse to look for better income in town.

Another resolution urged the state government to allocate funds for the perimeter survey for Native Customary Rights (NCR) land.

He noted that the federal government had given almost RM100 million but said support from the state government is still needed as NCR land covers a huge area of land in the state.

He also called attention to the Ngemah-Temalat-Song road with a length of 9km.

“The plantation road that we are using now is not reliable and can be dangerous during raining season,” Munan said.

The fourth resolution called for free education to all students who are entering university.

SWP currently has about 30,000 members. About 150 members from seven branches attended the AGM yesterday.
