KUCHING: Kuching South City Council mayor Dato James Chan Khay Syn is confident that powerlifting will become a popular sport in Kuching and Sarawak.

While noting that powerlifting is relatively a new sport in Kuching, he said it cannot be denied that there are many benefits that one can gain from it ranging from improved physical and mental health to creating a like-minded fitness community where one can support and encourage each other.

“Powerlifting is big attraction in the United States where they hold a lot of activities.

“It is new here and it is something that the youth like to get involved in.

“When you take part in this sport, you become part of the community, you love this sport and don’t even mind to help each other,” he said at the opening of the inaugural Kuching Powerlifting Meet at Crossfit Kuching yesterday.

The mayor said with the youths joining powerlifting instead of other unhealthy activities, it would to further enhance and promote Kuching as a “Healthy City” in the Asian region.

He also commended Powerlifting Kuching for taking the initiative to develop the powerlifting scene in Kuching for the benefit of the people.

The competition, which is organised by Crossfit Kuching, attracted 28 men and women lifters who are competing in three categories namely Paralympic Bench, Squat and Deadlift.
