Traffic congestion in Limbang town a common occurrence during the fruit season.
LIMBANG: Limbang District Council (LDC) and Unimas will jointly conduct a study to address traffic congestion in the town under the Limbang traffic flow masterplan.
Assistant Minister of Agriculture Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail said the study to begin this year is part of the government’s short-term efforts through LDC.
He added that Limbang faced traffic congestion, especially during the current fruit season that attracted buyers not only from Sarawak but also neighboring Brunei, Sabah and Labuan Federal Territory.
“For short-term measures, LDC has been instructed to jointly conduct with Unimas research on traffic congestion in Limbang Town which is worrying,” he told reporters yesterday.
The Bukit Kota assemblyman said the study’s component included having a one-way route and increasing parking lots to solve shortages in recent years.
“Shortage of parking lots is worsening, especially during the fruit season in Limbang,” he explained.
Dr Abdul Rahman said as a long-term strategy, the construction of the Pan Borneo Highway with a route involving construction of the second Limbang bridge will give locals and outsiders alternative access to Limbang town.
On the development of the 1Malaysia Night Market, he said it is at the agreement stage between the tenants and utility/electricity providers.
“Presently the tenants will be solely responsible with Sesco for the electricity supply and so on,” he said.
He said the tenants had already been identified and were expected to move to the new site in February.
The RM2.5 million 1Malaysia Night Market was supposed to be ready last September – when in operation it will be a new attraction in the district, drawing visitors especially from Brunei.
The project, built over the last three years, offers eating outlet and a host of other amenities like garden and parking lots to cope with visitors.
The project inspired by Dr Abdul Rahman can enhance economic activities such as giving locals the opportunity to trade in the area.
