Fatimah assures welfare recipients of govt support

KUCHING: Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah has encouraged welfare fund recipients to work hard to change their financial status while assuring that the government would always support them.

“Some are getting better. Their career or business grows. They could change their lives and even help others,” she said at ‘Sejambak Kasih’ Chinese New Year donation event here yesterday.

To reduce financial burden of under privileged families and improve their quality of life, the Welfare Department presented RM100 ‘ang pow’ and a hamper worth RM50 to each recipient.

Amongst the total 7,362 recipients, 2,721 or 26.73 per cent are from Kuching, 141 from Samarahan, Serian (184), Sri Aman (260), 174 from Betong, 499 from Sarikei, Sibu (2,097), Mukah (147), Kapit (39), Bintulu (256), Miri (617) and 227 from Limbang.

According to Fatimah, the Social Welfare Department Sarawak had given out a total of RM192, 511,000 to 57,588 monthly welfare recipients from Jan to Dec 2017. Of the amount, RM33,849,800 were disbursed to 10,178 monthly recipients in the Kuching Division.

Also present were Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, Social Welfare Department Sarawak director Abang Shamshuddin Abang Seruji and Kuching Division Resident Ismail Mohd Hanis.
